What does CMS mean and why do I need a WordPress blog?

Before I answer that question, I want to clarify one of the biggest misconceptions and objections about blogs. I was in a clients office about a week ago. We had told her she needed a blog to help market her business in an email message, she flatly rejected the idea. I was curious why she had made such a hasty decision, so I asked her. Her comment was something like “I don’t want to have to deal with all those jerks out there who leave bad comments!” I chuckled…

Then I explained to her that there was a little box you can check in the blog controls area that holds all comments for review and approval, or deletion! Delete all of the comments if you want, or just the crappy ones! While having an active blog including comments is the best way to get free traffic, the installation of a WordPress blog somewhere on your site offers so much more than just a social traffic generator.

CMS (Content management system) and in particular WordPress installs are simply the easiest way to create good content and build some backlinks to help your rankings in Google. If you’re like most business owners, you don’t have time to learn complicated code to constantly ad new content to your website. But content is exactly what Google wants to see to reward you with good search positioning.

Anyone, with the right information, can learn to create an interesting page of content, including a backlink or two, and publish it to the web in less than 5 minutes using WordPress! When you publish your content, WordPress sends a message to Google and says “Hey, we have some new content here, come look” Google will send it’s bot to your site, sometimes in just 10 – 15 minutes, and check out the new content. It will also typically crawl some of the links on the page, pointing to other pages on your site that you want to rank well.

If you do this once or twice a week, after a while you will have better traffic, and better search position. The whole process is not much different than writing a paragraph in Word or any text editor. Everything is done in a WYSIWYG environment, strictly push button and copy and pasting. Best of all, no expensive web master fees to pay for your content!

Leave your site static, without ever publishing new content, and you will be challenged to make money with it, provided you aren’t buying traffic that is! 🙂
